Mather Vernal Pool Public Tours

Critter Walks: Sunday, March 4th & 18th at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm
Flower Walks: Sunday, April 8th & 29th at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm

Join Sacramento Splash for a 2-hour tour of the Mather Field vernal pools. In March, the pools should be filled with water and tons of weird, wonderful critters that can only live in this rare habitat. In April, as the spring sun warms the earth and the pools evaporate, the wet phase gives rise to the flower phase. Each pool has its own assortment of critters and flowers depending upon the soil, hydrology and many factors we don't yet understand. They even change from week to week! For more information and to sign-up, visit sacsplash.org's vernal pool flower walks or call 916/364-2437. Tickets are free. Reservations are required.

West Nature Area Tour at former McClellan AFB

Tuesday, April 10th, 10:00am - Noon

The Air Force will offer a tour of the West Nature Area at the former McClellan Air Force Base. Visitors will learn about the long-term conservation plans for this 220-acre wildlife preserve and the work the Air Force has undertaken to remediate and restore the area. During the tour, Air Force personnel will discuss the site's natural resources and protected species, as well as habitat management topics such as beaver dam-building activity in the area and invasive plants. If we're lucky, we may even get to see some of the areas vernal pools in bloom.

Directions: Join us at 3411 Olson St, McClellan CA at 10:00am. Park in lot adjacent to Watt Avenue, at the end of Olson St.  SEE MAP  Meet at the Air Force building where people will take vans or carpool to the West Nature Area.
For questions contact Brian Sytsma, Public Affairs office (916/643-1250 x 257).

Creatures of the Creek

Wednesday, April 11th 6:00pm until dark

Join Regional San Bufferlands biologists on a walking tour of Morrison and Laguna Creeks. Explore the restored habitats of the Bufferlands in search of the animals which call the local creeks home. Sightings of fish, turtles, herons and beavers are all possible as we roam this unique area.

The meeting location is weather-dependent, so please contact Steve Scott at 916/875-9307 or email scotts@sacsewer.com the week preceding the event for exact meeting location and directions.
