TIME TO CARE FOR CREEKS

Sacramento area creeks and sloughs need to be cleaned periodically of the man-made garbage that is illegally dumped or gets washed into them.  Spring is a good time to do an area-wide clean-up because the bigger winter storms have passed, and much of the garbage is left on the creek banks. Winter brings muddy banks and high water, while summer brings stickers and punishing sun, less than ideal conditions for clean-up volunteers.

Caring for our creekand their borders by controlling trash, pollutants and non-native plants is important for many reasons: it limits flooding by allowing for proper drainage; it helps wildlife in urban areas that depend on creeks and the bordering plants for survival; it contributes to a safe drinking water supply.

Creeks need our care year-round

  • Fewer car trips help our waterways because motor vehicles slough off pollutants such as oil, copper and zinc.
  • Because native plants don’t need fertilizer and pesticides, replacing lawns with grasses and plants that grow here naturally contributes to the health of our local creeks.
  • Proper use & disposal of chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, oil and paints, protects the environment, including our creeks.

Show that you Care
Volunteer for Creek Week 2011!

A variety of activities were offered to support a healthy creek system: trash and debris removal, removing invasive non-native plants, water quality testing and planting native plants—it all makes a difference!

Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle.
